Scale Models was established as a spin-off from ‘Aero Modeller’ magazine, focusing on all aspects of scale plastic modeling. It covered a variety of subjects, including aircraft, cars, ships, engines, motorbikes, and space vehicles, as well as armored vehicles and military figures, until the launch of its sister publication, ‘Military Modelling,’ a year later. Each issue typically featured excellent coverage of aircraft modeling, particularly in camouflage and markings, along with incredibly detailed scale drawings in later editions, and included tone (and later color) profile drawings alongside numerous black and white and color photos. In the UK market, it was the primary competitor to ‘Airfix Magazine,’ eventually surpassing it. From an aircraft modeler's perspective, the May-November 1973 issues marked a low point as the magazine rebranded to ‘Scale incorporating Model Cars,’ which took up valuable space with toy car content. Fortunately, this title was dropped at the end of 1973, restoring the magazine's focus. In July 1978, it absorbed another by becoming ‘Scale Models incorporating World Models,’ this time without any negative impact. Oddly, ‘incorporating Model Cars’ reappeared from November 1979 to September 1980, when it was replaced by ‘incorporating PAM NEWS.’ This section focused on aircraft modeling, enhancing the magazine's appeal. In December 1980, the title returned to simply ‘Scale Models,’ and starting from the August 1983 issue, it was renamed ‘Scale Models International.’
