Wings At War: RAAF at Evans Head 1939-1945 (1995) By Jean Haughton-James & Sheila Manley

 

An emergency landing ground prior to World War II, Evans Head was the home base for No 1 Air Observers School and No 1 Bombing and Gunnery School. As a result of these two units being in the area, a series of gunnery and bombing ranges were constructed in the area, which continues to be used by the RAAF to the present day.

 

Cpl WAAAF Jean Haughton-James and Sheila Manley who were among the first eight women who served here. The book covers the history of the RAAF Station from 1939 to 1945 and brings to life the contribution made by the WAAAF.
