The Thirty Niners (1981) By Peter Charlton

An account of the varied exploits of the original volunteers for the second Australian Imperial Force who enlisted in the last months of 1939. After glory in the Libyan desert, there were debacles in Greece and Crete. Nearly 1/3 of these original volunteers spent the rest of the war in German POW camps. Using letters, diaries, interviews, and published battalion & unit memoirs and histories the author traces them through 6 years of war, their conflicts with the militia and British in the Middle East, their return to Australia, and the war in New Guinea.
