A historical narrative on the surrender of Napoleon, written by Maitland, an officer in the Royal Navy during the Napoleonic Wars, with various illustrated plates and a folding map.

 

Illustrations include a frontispiece, six illustrated plates, and one folding map.

 

This is a historical work chronicles the surrender of Napoleon Bonaparte, as well as his time on the H.M.S. Bellerophon. Bonaparte boarded this ship in 1815 so that he could surrender to the ship's captain, who is the author of this work. This ended twenty-two years of continuous war between Britain and France.

 

Contents include 'Captain Maitland sets sail in the Bellerophon, with sealed instructions', 'A man and boy in flat punt saved', 'Buonaparte speaks of Sir Sydney Smith', and 'English coast in sight'.

 

Frederick Lewis Maitland (1777-183) was a Royal Navy officer in both the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars. He held a number of commands, including rear admiral, and was most famous for witnessing the formal end of the Napoleonic Wars.

 

Edited by William Kirk, who includes a memoir of the author at the beginning of text.
