The Saturday Night Soldiers (1966) By A.V. Sellwood

Once nicknamed the "Saturday Night Soldiers", this is the story of the Territorial Army. It is a story that tells of deeds of heroism in two World Wars; of enthusiasm battling with peacetime muddle and neglect; of an institution so British that it bewildered and confounded its foreign critics yet moved them to imitation. Green Jackets and Glamorgans, London Scottish and London Irish, The Buffs, The Norfolks and the Queens, Robin Hood s and the H.L.I.

These and others are the proud battalions whose deeds are now enshrined in the battle-honours of the county regiments. In Germany, they were derided as a "sort of Sunday School for amateur soldiers and in no way considered as an efficient combat force". But the jokes and jibes turned sour on those who made them when the chips went down and amateurs went to war.
