The Longest Retreat: The Burma Campaign 1942 (1972) By Tim Carew

The Book tells the story of the defeat of British forces in Burma from the view of the soldiers and units involved. Stories of the individual actions of both men and units. The mix of nationalities involved, including the Chinese and the AVG (Flying Tigers). And the privations involved of men who retreated with often only what they could carry. Imprudent soldiers took off their boots when they swam rivers and were forced to carry on marching without them. Those who could not swim had to improvise 'rafts' and try their luck in the water.

It is a tale of defeat and individual heroic acts.
