The Light Infantry Ball (1959) By Hamilton Basso

On the morning of the 20th of January, 1861, John Bottomley was a worried man.  The previous night at the Light Infantry Ball, the climax of the social year in Pompey's Head, a series of problems had been brought to a head.  he was troubled by his love for Lydia, recently married to a man twice her age; he was concerned about Cameron, his brother, who had disappeared suddenly and completely on the eve of his engagement; the sinister shadows of the Civil War were already apparent and John could not honestly pledge his loyalty to the South, though it was the home of his family and his ancestors.  It was this divided loyalty which had resulted in the duel for which he prepared on the morning after the ball.
