The Black Watch (1983) By Eric and Andro Linklater
The essence of 'The Black Watch' story is its imperial service in America, India and Africa, the epic battles against the French in Europe and in the two world wars of the 20th century when thousands of men fought- and died in the Black Watch battalions. These are admirably evoked in a fluent, intimate account by Eric Linklater, the distinguished Scottish author who served in the Regiment as a very young man. Linklater and his son Andro, who saw the book to publication after his father died, give a strong sense of the family-like esprit de corps in the Black Watch. It is not however a hagiography. The regiment's less happy episodes are also examined in an even-handed, humane manner. Handsomely produced and illustrated
