Recollections Of An Admiral's Wife 1903-1916 (1916) By Lady Poore

The book is concerned with Lady Ida Poore's doings and tell little of her Husband, Admiral Richard Poore's life or exploits; he commanded the Naval Brigade during the Nile Expedition of 1885. Born in Ireland in 1860, Lady Poore was the daughter of a Dean and describes her earliest recollections and her impressions of Dublin society and travels all over Ireland. She went on to travel overseas after marrying Commodore Poore and describes the Egyptian War, her husband's service in the VICTORIA & ALBERT, HAWKE, ILLUSTRIOUS, and JUPITER; the APOLLO struck rocks in a fog. She also gives an account of his command of HMS TOURMALINE, and naval visits to Canada, USA, West Indies and the Mediterranean. Before ww1 he was posted to Australia as described in 'Recollections'. In ww1 she was involved with welfare work for wives and families of sailors and survivors and her account is interesting for the picture it provides of general neglect on part of the Royal Navy itself.
