Patchwork Of War (1984) By John Mitchell
This is not a novel nor a straight autobiography but rather one man's impressions and recountings of various actions during World War II. John E. Macefield Mitchell, who obtained the rank of Lieutenant Commander, was either at, or closely associated with, the Fall of Tobruk, the Invasion of Europe at Normandy on D-Day, the Rhine Crossing and other history-making war operations. While he was a prisoner of war in Italy before being repatriated bac to the U.K. on the Isle de France, Lieutenant Commander Mitchell wrote many of the poems and did a series of sketches and paintings to complement his book. This is a work which is written with poignant insight; beautifully descriptive and very entertaining.
