Historie d'un Conscrit de 1813 (1909) By Erckmann-Chatrian

After the Russian campaign, Napoleon was forced to retreat and enlist young French people unfit for war. Joseph Bertha, lame and apprentice watchmaker, must leave his town of Phalsbourg to join the Grand Army which is fighting against the Cossacks and the Prussians. This novel is his story, that of a rank-and-file who must abandon the woman of his life and his dreams of happiness to endure the horror of carnage in favor of a frightful megalomania. Inspired by Captain Vidal's logbook, Histoire d'un conscrit de 1813 is a violent indictment against war and a praise of freedom; a testimony on the Napoleonic debacle. A model of popular novel: History lived on the side of the humble.
