Freyberg, V.C.: The Man 1939-45 (1965) By W.G. Stevens

It is with the human aspect of Freyberg in World War II that this book is concerned. Major General Stevens leaves the assessment of his tactics to others to complete. He shows Freyberg as a gentle and kindly figure, devoted to the men’s welfare - their clubs were almost an obsession with him - and modestly confident of his own powers.

He dispels once and for all that Freyberg was a “butcher”. He shows how throughout the war, his general was astutely diplomatic in dealing with the cabinet in Wellington. The story abounds in humour and dramatic incidents - all of which reveal Freyberg as having some few human weaknesses but being a truly fine character.

This book is a splendid tribute to New Zealand’s greatest soldier; it is also a notable addition to any collection of studies of New Zealanders.
