THIS was the badge of the Long Range Desert Group-the Sign of the Scorpion And it suited them. How well, only the Nazis and Italians in North Africa knew. The sting of their Vickers and Browning guns was twice as deadly as any Scorpion.
They roved far behind enemy lines attacking 'safe' German bases, airfields and ammo dumps. In their wanderings they cut communication lines, smashed convoys and spotted enemy weak points. Only a handful of men, really, yet their patrol area was a fantastic million square miles of trackless sand and sea, 100-mile-long cliffs, and 10,000-foot-high mountains.
This is the story of some of these amazing desert warriors; of two, in particular, Lieut. Mark Smith and Sergeant Rex Blane-of how they fought each other while trying to fight a war together.
