Bill Newton V.C.: The Short Life Of A RAAF Hero (1999) By Mark Weate

 

The detailed biography of Flight Lieutenant Bill Newton VC – He was awarded a posthumous Victoria Cross as a Boston bomber pilot over Papua New Guinea during World War 2.

 

William Ellis Newton joined the Royal Australian Air Force in the early months of World War II. Flight Lieutenant Bill Newton served with No 22 RAAF Squadron in New Guinea from May 1942, and completed 52 operational sorties as a Boston Bomber pilot. He was captured and executed on the order of Japanese Unit Commander Uichi Komai and Ruitaro Fujita in accordance with Japanese Bushido and was beheaded with a Japanese sword. His remains were found in October 1943 by Carl Jacobson in the Lae area. Bill Newton was awarded the Victoria Cross posthumously.
