Australian Defence College #1: From The Long Peace To The Long War: Armed Conflict And Military Education And Training In The 21st Century (2007) By Michael Evans

Australian Defence College Occasional Series #1

This paper provides a half-century overview of armed conflict from the Cold War "Long Peace", through the post-Cold War era to the present "Long War" era of 21st century globalised security. The aim of the analysis is to identify the main changes in the conduct of war and strategy that are likely to shape new requirements for joint military education and training in the first quarter of the new millennium. It is argued in this paper that, for much of the first half of the Cold War, the nuclear revolution saw the Western profession of arms lose much of its traditional influence over the making of strategy to a new class of civilian strategists. Loss of strategic influence led Western military professionals to embrace the operational level of war and the operational art, major elements of which were reflected in military education curricula
